Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday babe! Anya had a fun birthday and I really wanted to make her a special cake, so I put together this euro style Neapolitan cake. It took FOREVER to make! I will NEVER make it again! Uggggh. I had to bake 15 very thin layers of dough and making the custard filling was a ton of work too. OK, OK… It wasnt going so well, so Anya jumped in and…. well, it still didnt go well! The kitchen turned into a disaster area. Boy, it sure is difficult baking without much counter top space. Mental note when I redo the kitchen some day… add more counter tops! We pulled it all together and the final product tasted and looked pretty dang good. But dont ever ask us to make it again 🙂

Was it good? Ohhh hell YEAH! Better than anything you will have in a store. But the time it took to make… incredible. This is an old world Russian recipe for Neapolitan. 15 layers. The ones in stores are lucky to have 3 or 4 layers and mostly custard filling. This one is not mind numbing sweet either like you would find in stores today. This is the real deal from a recipe passed down for over 100 years. Yah… it was delicious. OK, if I make it again… it will have to be a really special occasion, like a baby announcement or something 😉

Found this while looking for a REAL Neapolitan style pizza crust recipe online. Been searching for one to match up with my favourite pizzeria's (Proto's in Boulder CO) style for AGES.
I totally hear ya on the counter space thing. I move around frequently and I have to laugh every time I hear or read about houses that claim to include a "Gourmet Kitchen" -because invariably they are far from ideal. It always seems that builders and architects neglect to think about what "Gourmet" would truly entail- and plenty of counter space is one of the MOST important things! Haha.
Annnyhooo- this looks A-MAZ-ING. I would imagine it tastes fabulous enough to be worth the effort. I had never heard of Neapolitan cake before. Looks so delish- will have to find a recipe and try it out now!

Hey thanks 🙂 so did you find your crust recipe? Im finding it very easy to get a neapolitan style flavor by doing the pizza on a slab of marble or granite on top of a gas grill.
